To “call an Uber” is second nature in the city. But in the car-obsessed suburbs of America, many still questioned whether Uber was relevant or reliable. Our challenge was to change that outdated perception. Not through a generic statement, but by showing we truly understood the realities of suburban life.
We set out to elevate that functional message - that Uber is there for all the moments your car can’t be - into something human and local, in the context of the holidays.
In a cluttered holiday category, Uber’s first ever holiday film, “Close,” part of a new platform “There Are Drivers In Your Area,” tells a story of an emotional journey inside a physical one.
At its heart, “Close” reframes something ordinary - an Uber ride home - as something profoundly and deeply human; a safe space for reflection. It’s here that a traveller sits with her thoughts before walking back into unresolved family tension, rejecting the neat fantasy of holiday perfection, and choosing something truer: love and conflict sharing the same zipcode.
The film suggests something gently optimistic: that closeness does not have to be perfect to be real, and that despite the complications of modern relationships, we’re never as far as we feel.
