Enterogermina, the world’s leading probiotic brand, set out to spark a cultural conversation about a behaviour almost everyone shares yet rarely questions: eating food that falls on the floor. Instead of lecturing people about microbes, the brand chose a far more unexpected path challenging one of the world’s most iconic “laws of everyday life”: the idea that toast always lands butter-side down.
To do this, Enterogermina brought together Robert Matthews, an Ig Nobel–winning physicist known for studying Murphy’s Law, and Nuño García, a chef decorated with 12 Michelin stars. Together, they engineered something that had never done before: a real, edible toast scientifically designed to fall butter-side up. After multiple prototypes, calculations, and tests, the toast became a functional product served to the public at Le Pain Quotidien and tested spontaneously by influencers, journalists, and everyday people.
The entire experiment was captured in a short documentary released on Discovery Channel, giving the idea mass reach. What began as a health message evolved into a cultural event: trending conversations, earned media across science and lifestyle outlets, thousands of user-generated tests, and a renewed curiosity about our daily habits.
