This work started with a simple but transformative idea: blood donation is reciprocal. For years, blood donation messaging focused mainly on urgency and patient need. It raised awareness, but often treated donation as a one-time response to crisis. We wanted to build something more lasting: a relationship people would return to. So we flipped the script. Instead of telling only the story of who receives blood, we told the story of who gives it—and what they tangibly experience in return. Through research with regular donors, we heard the same themes again and again: donation gives people purpose, connection, pride, and a real sense of accomplishment. Many even wear milestone pins as a visible badge of honour. That became our platform: Who’s Saving Who? The question captures the emotional truth at the heart of the work. Yes, donation saves lives. But donors also describe feeling changed by the act itself—more connected, more useful, more human. Creatively, we reflected that reciprocity with a warm, invitational tone and intimate storytelling. Patients were portrayed with dignity and agency, not as passive symbols of crisis. Film, social, digital, OOH, and live experience each carried the same idea from different angles: giving blood is not just a charitable obligation; it is a meaningful personal ritual you choose and repeat. Across every touchpoint, the message remained clear: blood donation gives life to others—and gives something real back to the donor. By shifting from guilt to meaning, and from one-way sacrifice to mutual value, the work aimed to help build a new generation of ritual donors—and a stronger culture of giving in Canada.
