Imagine losing the ability to hold a pen. To drink a cup of tea. Or share a meal in public without embarrassment. For more than 60 million people worldwide, this is daily life with essential tremor, the most common movement disorder on the planet. Yet despite its scale, the condition remains largely invisible. Nearly 80 percent of patients never seek medical help, often believing it is simply part of aging. “Back to Life” was created to change that. This was not a product campaign. It was a cause driven movement to reframe essential tremor as a serious, treatable neurological condition and to give a voice to millions of people living in silence. At its heart was powerful, real patient storytelling, led by Downton Abbey creator Lord Julian Fellowes, who shared his personal journey with essential tremor and his experience of treatment. His story became a catalyst to humanise the condition, turning clinical understanding into emotional connection. The campaign focused on what tremor takes away, the small, everyday moments that define independence, and what treatment can restore. Writing. Cooking. Eating. Living. Launched through a coordinated PR strategy, the campaign reached beyond healthcare media into mainstream culture. By aligning with the premiere of a Downton Abbey film, it captured global attention and brought the conversation into the public domain. The results were transformative: • More than 1 billion global reach through earned media • Coverage across 305 outlets, including People Magazine, The New York Post and The Times • Extensive syndication across global and regional media The campaign also mobilised a wider ecosystem of advocacy and influence: • Partnerships with the National Tremor Foundation, Focused Ultrasound Foundation and NHS • Campaign content used in UK and EU Parliament events to raise awareness among policymakers • A Joint Declaration signed by 25 patient advocacy groups and policymakers, calling for improved access to care Crucially, the campaign drove real behaviour change: • Patients actively seeking treatment information • Increased engagement with educational resources • Significant increases in physician awareness and adoption of treatment “Back to Life” transformed essential tremor from a hidden condition into a global conversation. It showed that when you move beyond clinical messaging and tell human stories, you do more than raise awareness. You create understanding, drive action, and give people hope.
